When you launch your website, you are likely to have a very busy schedule. Content creation, site optimization, social networking, etc.

There are two things you should know about your shiny new website.

One: in terms of additional features, there is no better than WordPress due to thousands of plugins that are available to you. Most of them are free at the very least for the basic use.

Two: Each plugin has ‘weight’ on your website that will impact page loading, among other factors. So, don’t start installing everything like crazy just because it’s free.

In fact, we have prepared a short list for you about the best plugins you should start off.

Yoast SEO

yoast

First and foremost, Yoast SEO. It’s essential for anyone who is not the expert in search engine optimization but also doesn’t want to focus only on that aspect of the site. It will not solve all your problems but, to start, it will help you optimize your website and every post you write.

What’s best is that even a beginner will know instinctively how to get about. All you really have to do is pick a keyword, while Yoast will make sure you haven’t forgotten to use it where you must.

JetPack

jetpack

Jetpack is a multi-functional beast that will do the heavy lifting for you. What exactly does it do? A lot. ‘A lot’ as in from checking spelling to helping with web design. It also has a few social sharing features as well as help with site security and traffic

Akismet

akismet

If you are building your very first site, you may consider spam prevention an unimportant issue. Unfortunately, the way internet works it is not the case. Very soon your site will be flooded with spam comments and visits.

But you don’t need to worry because Akismet is helping millions of bloggers and webmasters just like you to keep those horrible bots away. And it does it brilliantly, even when it has to separate between a comment about 100 spins for free from a legit fan versus a shady bot link back.

Oh, and it’s incredibly easy to use.

Google XML Sitemaps

google

This plugin has a single purpose, but an incredibly important one. Google’s (or any other search engine’s crawler) will be visiting your website and it needs road signs to know where to go.

Google XML Sitemaps plugin will create a dynamic XML Sitemap and help the spiders of search engines get around easier – earning you valuable SEO points in the process.

Conclusion

These plugins will get you started and, to be fair, will be enough for a long time for most of you. Is there anything else? Of course.

But most importantly, you are 10 times better off to utilize three plugins the most you can than packing your site with 10 plugins and never using them. Yes, that happens. Often.

There is one thing that non-professionals do wrong when they are building their blogs. Time and time again. And this mistake costs them.

That mistake is being careless with plugins.

First day on WordPress

WordPress now powers around 25% of all websites. Why wouldn’t it? It’s very easy to use. Everything you need can be installed and updated with one click.

But that can also be a problem. If everything is virtually free and easy to install you start going through the list without much concern.

Most of the app pitches are well-written, I will give them that. But it is also our own carelessness that is at fault. We go through the store installing plugins for security, creating landing pages and contact forms, better SEO optimization, etc. I’ve noticed that in a lot of the cases the reason for this behavior is explained by saying the install is only to try out the plugin.

Hey, it is not the App Store (or Google Play). Whichever you prefer.

Everything you do impact your website.

First, often 80% of these plugins are never removed despite the fact they are never used.

Second, every plugin installed slows down your website

Third, you lose focus. Stop acting like a headless chicken and installing random plugins like they are going out of fashion. They are not going anywhere.

3 plugins you need to start out

When you build a website, or decide to review your plugins, make sure you have 3 plugins:

Akismet – to battle against spam. Trust me, even if you don’t have traffic, spam bots will find your new blog very soon.

Yoast SEO – for better SEO optimization. Read the description of the plugin and actually dedicate time to learn how it works.

Jetpack – sooner or later you will want to add pop-ups and subscription boxes to your website. Jetpack is a great start. Just like Yoast, you need to learn to use this plugin to get the most out of it.

Don’t install anything else. It may look necessary, or sexy, or fun. Listen, installing random plugins can cost you more than just load speed. Even if you are not building a commercial site, like these pokies game sites, even if you plan to only write your memoirs on your site, you don’t want to risk it getting hacked.

Even if it’s rare, there is a bigger point here. If you install 10 plugins in a day, you have certainly done zero research on them and, most likely, won’t have time to learn to use them.

So, these plugins will simply sit on your CMS, like apps on your smartphone you haven’t used for 5 months.

Just like the rising Minimalist movement suggests, focus on doing less with much quality than lots of different things badly. There is time to experiment but website plugins is not one.

There are many things that can slow down your blog. If you want your blog to function efficiently, you need to optimise it. If you don’t do that, visitors will have a difficult time browsing through your blog. Let us talk about ways you can optimise your blog.

  • Host:

Don’t go for random hosts or hosting plans which are cheap. There are many hosts which are not really reliable and make your blog slow down. You can research on the most preferred hosts. Reviews from other bloggers will also give you some idea of good hosts. Some of the good and reliable hosts are MDDHosting, WPEngine, Bluehost.

  • Plugin:

Additional plugins are one of the reasons why your website might not function effectively. Do not add plugins if you are not sure about what kind of plugin it is. Some plugins are responsible for making websites slow. It does not mean that if you add more plugins, your website will become slower. It is certain plugins that make it slower. Hence it is not the quantity of plugins but the quality of plugins that matter. Plugins that are coded well will not give you any problem no matter what the quantity is.

  • Theme:

As most of you are aware of, there are thousands of themes available for WordPress. These themes have been created by different people, and they have different features. If you use themes which have too many features, it can actually slow down your blog. We are not telling you to make your blog simple and plain. There are various good and catchy themes which will not slow down your blog. Some of these themes have also been not coded well making it slower to load your page. The default themes will not give you all these problems. You can actually use these themes and edit them if you find them too simple. If you are good with codes then you can do it yourself or else you can search for a developer who can help you.

  • Images:

Images beautify your blogs no doubt. But they can also slow down your blogs. You can optimise your images by specifying the dimensions of images you will upload and reducing their size without altering the quality. Smush is great software and plugin that you will find in WordPress that allows you to resize images without altering the quality. Photoshop and Lazy Load will also help you do the trick.

  • Ads:

Advertisements which are added from third party networks are one of the biggest causes of slowing your blog down. It can also be harmful to you and your blog because some advertisements become messy for viewers. Sometimes there are a lot of pop ups whenever viewers click anywhere or even just scroll down. This can reduce the visitors on your blog. Advertisements will be a source of income for you as bloggers but do choose them carefully because it can slow down your website or chase away viewers.

WordPress is one of the best sites for blogging. It is easy to use as well as complicated at the same time. As primary users, you can get by because it is user-friendly. However, there are several tricks that will help you save time and make use of WordPress much better.

  • Quick edit:

There is an option called the Quick Edit. Like its name sounds it allows you to edit the title of your post, categories, date, time, permalink and tags. It also allows you to make sticky posts, allow and disable comments or make your post private. This can also be done through the usual edit by going to your dashboard. But this takes longer time, so quick edit is a better option if you want to save time. You can find this option by going to the post section and choosing it.

  • HD Images:

The default quality for pictures that can be uploaded in WordPress is 90%. You wouldn’t be able to post a higher quality than 90%. However, there is a trick to it which we will tell you. For people whose blogs depend on or are dedicated to posting pictures, you can upload pictures with 100% quality by using the following formula. Add or enter the formula in a new plugin or the functions.php:

add_filter( ‘jpeg_quality’, create_function( ”, ‘return 100;’ ) );

  • Post scheduling:

Did you know that you can schedule your posts to be posted at specific times and dates? It is very easy. Open the post which you want to make a schedule for. Do you see the publish box? Click on it and select the edit option. Then choose the date and day you want to post. Click on the ‘ok’ option right below. Then select ‘Schedule’ which will be on the bottom. Then it’s done

  • Distraction Free:

This mode offers users to work without any feature of WordPress that can disturb you. It is useful if you want to write without being distracted. To enable this feature, you need to toggle full screen. Depending on your browser, press F11 for Mozilla Firefox and for those of you who use Google Chrome, press alt + shift + G. Then make a new post from your dashboard. You will find an option for ‘Distraction Free Writing’. Click that.

  • Sticky Post:

Do you have posts on your blog that you find important? Do you have posts that you want anyone who enters your blog to see? You can do it using these simple steps. There is an option called ‘Sticky’ which you need to click in your Post Editor settings. You will find an edit option near “Visibility: Public”. Click on edit, and you will find an option on the drop down menu. Check the box next to ‘Stick this post to the front page’. After you are done with all these steps, click on ‘Ok’ and then finally select ‘Publish’. Your post will appear immediately on your front page
